States Reap Big Bucks In Tight Political Races

Democratic-Donkey-GOP-ElephantWith Virginia’s electoral votes crucial in the presidential election, the Washington market has reaped the most political ad dollars this year through the end of September, according to an analysis from Wells Fargo. Four markets in Florida and three in Ohio are in the top 20.

The Cleveland market is second, with Columbus ninth and Cincinnati 19th. In Florida, Tampa and Orlando — two markets that are considered critical in determining a presidential victory — are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Las Vegas and Denver, also big markets in battleground states, come in third and sixth, respectively.

The data includes local TV and radio advertising.

Virginia, Ohio and Nevada are also generating spending, given U.S. senate races deemed toss-ups by RealClearPolitics.com. Florida has a seat up for grabs that is in the “leans”-Democratic column, according to the site.

In terms of markets where political dollars are generating the highest percentage of TV ad revenues, six in Montana are in the top 10. The state has a toss-up senate race with incumbent Jon Tester and a governor’s race for an open seat.

Iowa is considered a presidential swing state and the Sioux City and Davenport markets follow Bozeman, Mont. as second and third, respectively.
