Indie Book Publishing is Working in LA

  • LA Weekly, Wednesday, November 7, 2012 12 PM

Anthony Berryman, a Compton High School English and philosophy teacher, founded Mugger Press in Eagle Rock in 2011, according to LA Weekly. A book-publishing house in today’s world seems unlikely to succeed, but Berryman has been finding success publishing indie books from the LA area.

Mugger Press isn’t the only indie book-publishing house in Los Angeles that has been working out. Others include: Narrow Books, Writ Large Press, A Barnacle Book, Red Hen Press, Les Figures Press, and more.

Narrow Books co-founder Mark Dischler said in the article, “The reason why the business model worked, in a weird, twisted way, is because we were working for free. We were putting in all this extra time because we really wanted to see this thing finished. We really wanted to create a voice for what we liked and put it out there."
