IBM: Cyber Monday Sales Up 30%

Cyber Monday sales jumped 30.3% from a year ago, making it the biggest online spending day to date, according to new data from IBM. Mobile continued to play a growing role in holiday shopping, with 18% visiting a retail site via mobile, up 70% from a year ago. Mobile as a percentage of online sales on Cyber Monday nearly doubled to 13%.

Mobile sales and traffic, however, were both down more than 20% from Black Friday as people went back to work and did more shopping from their desktop PCs.

As with Black Friday, the iPad generated more traffic than any other tablet or smartphone, accounting for more than 7% of online shopping. The Apple tablet was followed closely by the iPhone at 6.9%, and Android at 4.5%.  The iPad also dominated tablet traffic, reaching a high of 90.5%, based on IBM’s tracking of 500 U.S. retail sites.

Separate data released by Adobe on Tuesday showed a smaller gain of 17% on Cyber Monday sales to $1.98 billion. The mobile share of online transactions doubled to 22% from 2011, according to the Adobe Digital Index, which collects data from 500 retail sites.
