NYC Fast-Food Workers Stage Strike

  • November 30, 2012

Fast-food workers from restaurants across New York City formed picket lines Thursday morning to protest wages they deem too low, as well as their part-time hours, reports Crain's New York Business.

Workers protested outside some 20 locations -- mostly in Manhattan -- of leading QSR chains, including McDonald's.

The strikers do not belong to a union. The initiative is spearheaded by New York Communities for Change, a labor-backed organization that has seen some success in organizing car-wash and grocery store employees in the city in recent months.

The campaign is also supported by the major union SEIU. It started this summer and is advocating for an hourly wage of $15 -- about $6 more than the median wage for fast-food workers in New York State. It also aims to recruit workers to join an independent, new union, the Fast Food Workers Committee, created by the strikers. The committee does not yet represent any workers.
