Papers Go Global In Battle For Growth

The Guardian is the latest London newspaper that is trying to conquer the world, according to the London Evening Standard's Gideon Spanier. Despite the threat of strike action at home over plans to make up to 68 staff redundant, the loss-making paper has given the goahead for a new digital edition for Australia, following on the heels of its Guardian America operation. The hope at The Guardian is that costs in Oz can be contained by teaming up with a local investor — Graeme Wood, who backs the independent news website The Global Mail — and that it can generate new profitable revenues.
