Connectivity Important For TV Shoppers

  • January 3, 2013

Consumers shopping for a high-definition television are looking for features that connect them to the wider entertainment options available from the Internet.

According to the Consumer Electronics Association, more than one in five U.S. adults already own a smart app-enabled HDTV, and almost all of them (90%) use the apps on their displays in some manner. Of these users, 61% stream video content from the Internet, 56% browse the Internet and 54% view pictures through these apps. According to the survey, built-in Wi-Fi and Internet capability trails only high-quality audio and video as the most important purchase factor for a new set.

“We are living in an app-dominated world, whether it’s on your smartphone, tablet or television,” said Kevin Tillmann, senior research analyst at CEA, in a statement. “Consumers want access to their apps at all times and they will use whatever device, TVs included, that offer the best and most convenient user experience.”

This isn't what other research is showing. Since it's coming from the CEA, it should be treated as likely self-fulfilling research until/unless the substance behind this fluff is published. CEA is dedicated to this story - so it would not be surprising they created research guaranteed to show what they want. (And it's not hard to skew research to do that in any field.)
