Mobile payment service Square has added a pair of big-name partners: Verizon Wireless and consumer ratings and reviews site Angie’s List. Verizon Wireless stores nationwide began selling the Square Card Reader today for $9.97 along with $10 in credit for a Square account. After downloading the Square app, a merchant completes a sign-up process, links the service to their bank account to start receiving payments through the Reader. The Square attachment that plugs into iOS and Android devices allows a merchant’s customers to swipe credit or debit cards to pay. Square charges a flat fee of 2.75% per transaction, which it says ends up costing businesses less than costs and hidden fees charged by conventional credit card companies. The Verizon move comes five months after AT&T began selling the Square plug-in in its retail stores. Other retailers selling the Square Reader include Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Staples. Separately, Angie’s List said Thursday it has turned to Square to power card mobile payments for local businesses. Square software has been integrated into the Anglie’s List Business Center app for iOS so companies can accept payments in the field, track purchases and create invoices, and get analytics reports.
