Verizon Selling Square Reader

  • January 31, 2013

Mobile payment service Square has added a pair of big-name partners: Verizon Wireless and consumer ratings and reviews site Angie’s List.

Verizon Wireless stores nationwide began selling the Square Card Reader today for $9.97 along with $10 in credit for a Square account. After downloading the Square app, a merchant completes a sign-up process, links the service to their bank account to start receiving payments through the Reader.

The Square attachment that plugs into iOS and Android devices allows a merchant’s customers to swipe credit or debit cards to pay. Square charges a flat fee of 2.75% per transaction, which it says ends up costing businesses less than costs and hidden fees charged by conventional credit card companies. The Verizon move comes five months after AT&T began selling the Square plug-in in its retail stores. Other retailers selling the Square Reader include Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Staples.

Why would you buy a reader when it's free from Square to anyone? Do that few people know about it? I see a ton of small very local merchants using it in my relatively small town USA part of the woods and I know they went directly to Square.
