FCC chairman Julius Genachowski is expected to vacate the post as early as next month, reports The Washington Post, noting White House and Capitol Hill sources. The next FCC chairman will inherit the job of boosting wireless networks, extend Internet access to the poor and oversee more media mergers. Top candidates are said to be Tom Wheeler, a telecom VC and Obama fundraiser, Karen Kornbluh, Obama's ambassador to the Organization for Economic cooperation and Lawrence Strickling, who heads the White House's tech and policy arm at the Commerce Dept.

The petition for captioning standards has now languished through 3 FCC Chairmen. We need an FCC Chair who will recognize that just slapping up captions with no regard for spelling or placement is not acceptable. It is form over function. Consumers have no market force to affect change without the FCC developing mandated standards. During Chairman Genachowski's tenure, I was able to work with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) to develop recommended captioning standards for commericals. If the ANA can develop recommended captioning standards than why can't the FCC? Janice Schacter Lintz, chair, Hearing Access Program
