Half of Americans Use Social Media In the Can

Have you ever wondered how many of the tweets and status updates you see on social media every day were composed when the author was on the toilet? No? Well perhaps you should start, because it is probably a pretty big number.

A survey conducted by CreditDonkey in March found that 52% of U.S. social media users say they have used Facebook while going to the bathroom, including 54% of men and 40.4% of women. Meanwhile 51.4% of men said they use social media while drunk, compared to 41.4% of women (in both cases, a possible explanation for the lower proportions among female users is that fewer women are disgusting slobs).

However women were more likely to use social media while watching TV, with 83.3% engaging in second-screen multitasking, compared to just 79.8% of men. No surprise, social media is also a common way of passing the time while traveling, with 72.5% of women and 69.5% of men visiting sites in transit, and killing time at work, with 62.4% of men and 58% of women goofing off. And 44.1% of women have used social media while shopping, compared to 36% of men.

Rather more alarming is the fact that 14.8% of male social media users and 11.8% of females have accessed social media while driving, which strikes me as being more than a tad irresponsible. In fact, fully 19% of all social media users have used Facebook while driving, and 15.1% have used Twitter, God help us all.

The phone is well on it's way to becoming today's medium of choice (for those that make such a choice) in the restroom. It would be interesting to know the relative share of those long-term restroom media; book, newspaper and magazine.
