Cartoon Characters Inaugurate Madison Avenue Walk of Fame

  • September 21, 2004
The Madison Avenue Walk of Fame made its debut Monday by inducting five familiar advertising characters and slogans. The winning icons, now immortalized by a plaque on 50th Street and Madison Ave., are the M&M's talking candies, the Aflac duck, Mr. Peanut, for Planters, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and Tony the Tiger, for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes cereal. The winning slogans are "Melts in your mouth, not in your hands," for M&M's, "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't," for Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars, "Where's the beef?" for Wendy's, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste," for the United Negro College Fund, and "Can you hear me now?" for Verizon Wireless. The public was able to vote on the winners through a Web site sponsored by Yahoo! and USA Today. About 600,000 people participated in the online election.
