Underwood, NFL Players Team For 'Sunday Night Football' Sequence

NBC is putting its faith in a group of NFL players to strengthen its new opening sequence for “Sunday Night Football.” Thirteen players, including the Manning brothers, will join Carrie Underwood in a rendition tabbed “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.” Underwood replaces Faith Hill in doing the opening number.

Underwood debuts with NBC’s coverage of the Dallas vs. New York Giants game on Sept. 8. The NFLers joining her also include Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck, Green Bay’s Clay Matthews, Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs and Houston’s J.J. Watt. That group and the Mannings were part of a shoot in June.

Others participating include Detroit’s Calvin Johnson, San Francisco’s Patrick Willis and Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald.

The “SNF” theme is set to Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” Pink performed the song in 2006, “SNF’s” first year. Hill has performed since then.

Underwood, a former “American Idol” winner, will be a high-profile figure on NBC this fall as she’ll also star Dec. 5 in a live remake of the “Sound of Music” as Maria Von Trapp.

Highlights of the “SNF” schedule include Washington at Dallas, which could offer a national showcase for Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III, as well as Denver at New England as Peyton Manning would challenge Tom Brady.
