Facebook on Monday said its Graph Search tool will now include posts, status updates, photo captions, check-in and comments  -- in addition to being able to search for people, photos, places and interests on Facebook through the revamped search service the social network announced in January and rolled out widely to English speakers in July.

The latest expansion means that people can search for updates about topics of interest, posts about a city, place or from a certain time, and posts you might want to see again (“My posts from 2012”). As an example of a search for an interest-related post, Facebook said someone might look up “Posts about 'Breaking Bad’ by my friends.”

In a blog post today, the company reiterated that users can only see content in search results that has been shared with them, including posts made public by people who aren’t friends. Facebook is introducing the changes initially to a small set of those already using Graph Search to continue improving the service based on feedback.

Unlike search on Google, Graph Search is geared to gleaning information tied to users’ social connections through natural-language search queries rather than specific keywords. Facebook has yet to roll out advertising in Graph Search as it continues to refine the search service.
