Marissa Mayer To Speak At 4As Conference

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has joined the list of luminaries who will speak at this year’s 4As Transformation conference in Los Angeles from March 16-19, the trade association has confirmed.

Mayer made headlines recently when she dismissed the company’s COO, Henrique De Castro, who had been tasked with improving the media company’s relationship with Madison Avenue.

Mayer will be more involved going forward in selling Adland on the attributes of her company. Her appearance at the 4As annual conference is seen as part of her charm offensive to woo agency leaders and senior marketing executives at major advertisers. There will be plenty of both at the upcoming conference.

The organization said that branding, data, social responsibility and entrepreneurship are among the broad themes that will be addressed at this year’s conference.

Other industry notables that will be speaking at the conference include Bill Koenigsberg, CEO Horizon Media, Sarah Hofstetter, CEO, 360i, Karen Kaplan, CEO Hill Holliday and John Montgomery, COO of GroupM.

My suggestion is that (if Marissa truly wants to take a more active role in selling the attributes of Yahoo to Madison Avenue) that she start making face to face sales calls on each and every Yahoo advertiser of scale. I would hope that someone in the sales dept at Yahoo...has a punch list of key account advertising targets that would benefit from a personal visit and sales pitch from Marissa. Whether you are Yahoo's CEO or a "smaller company CEO"...If you aren't making LOTS of sales calls...you aren't truly leading a company.

Al glad I caught your comment -- you are so spot on -- it amazes me why media / publishing companies are run by people who have no experience selling what the company produces for sale -- that's why you can pick on Tim Armstrong of AOL all you want, but he is one of the very best media sales people I have ever seen in action. Put Tim and Marissa in a room with a media buyer and I can bet which one comes out with an insertion order :)
