'Boston Globe' Readying Catholic News Site, Laying Off Town Reporters

It's been another busy day in the back offices of the Boston Globe.

Just a few days after the launch of an ambitious new Web site dedicated to the region's tech community, details are now leaking out about a proposed second site that will be devoted to news about the Catholic Church.

Media industry expert Jim Romensko reports via his daily blog that Teresa Hanafin will serve as editor of the new site, which is not yet named. Hanafin was most recently community engagement editor for Boston.com. Globe Associate Editor John Allen, who has extensive experience covering Catholicism, will also play a critical role in crafting coverage.

In addition to Allen's coverage, the site will feature stories from its new Vatican correspondent, Argentinian journalist Ines San Martin. The site is slated to be unveiled in late spring, according to a Globe staff memo published on JimRomensko.com.

Meanwhile, the Globe plans to lay off the handful of reporters still attached to its Your Town section, according to the Boston Business Journal on Thursday. The reporters were responsible for covering news in dozens of smaller cities and towns in the Greater Boston area.

One of Your Town's chief competitors was Patch.com, which slashed its editorial ranks in January after it was sold by AOL to Hale Global.
