Mobile Agency Somo Gets $5.5 Million In Funding

London-based mobile marketing agency Somo on Wednesday announced securing $5.5 million in in follow-on funding from MMC Ventures and other private investors.

The agency plans to use the financing in part toward building a new mobile app tracking service called Lithient in its Somo Lab. It plans to create a similar development lab in New York, where it already operates an office.

Founded in 2009, Somo more than doubled in the last year with the addition of 60 staffers, including mobile engineers, and specialists in analytics, loyalty and social media. Clients include De Beers, British Gas, Tesco, Audi, BP and The New York Times.

Last year, mobile industry veteran Michael Becker joined London-based mobile agency Somo as marketing development and strategic advisor for North America in its San Francisco office. Becker has previously been managing director for North America at the Mobile Marketing Association.

The new investment in Somo comes from MMC Ventures’ London Fund, aimed at supporting the growth of new businesses in the city. Besides London, New York and San Francisco, it also operates outposts in Los Angeles, Singapore and Berlin.
