Fort Lauderdale Brings Beach Party To D.C.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is enticing capital city dwellers to consider a beachside getaway.

The “Beach Looks Good on You” special event May 15 promoted the destination’s summer value season and quick vacation getaway appeal for Washingtonians by bringing its beach chic vibe to the Verizon Center.

The all-day free beach party consumer event, which took place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the corner of 7th and F Streets,  transformed an ordinary city sidewalk into a tropical oasis with beach decor, a live beachcam streaming real-time Fort Lauderdale beach visuals, street teams handing out “Hello Sunny” sunglasses, bikini-clad models and chances to win a beach vacation and other prizes.

A SunnyDome offered a virtual-reality and multi-sensory experience and an interactive 3D sidewalk chalk beach scene, created by Baltimore artist Michael William Kirby, provided a backdrop for photo opportunities.

The event also included an appearance by DJ Tommy McFly, host of “The Tommy in the morning Show” on WIAD-FM. The promotion also includes the destination’s famed Beach Mobile and free pedicab rides all day and through the end of May.

The convention bureau’s summer savings program offers value for travelers with more than 35 attractions throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale with special 2-for-1 offers from May 1 to Sept. 30. These offers include water sports, kayaking, diving and boating, sightseeing, museum entry, shopping and spa services.

Summer visitors can also take advantage of a luxury-for-less with the Vacation Like a VIP package at 11 Lauderdale Luxe luxury resorts. The package features a free room upgrade, $100 resort credit, a $25 American Express Gift Card, complimentary resort valet parking, complimentary valet parking at The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills, along with complimentary glass of Prosecco for two at Villagio Ristorante and the Summer Savings 2-for-1 card valued at $200 plus additional savings.

The convention bureau is partnering with JetBlue, which makes getting to Greater Fort Lauderdale an easy hop.

“We are bringing our beach party to DC to remind Washingtonians that a very special beach vacation awaits them just a few hours away,” said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, in a release.

The promotion is detailed on www.sunny.org, where users can also enter to win the Fort Lauderdale beach getaway contest, including roundtrip airfare on JetBlue, at Sunny.org/DCWin.
