'Voice,' 'Dancing' Head Season On Downbeat

Two broadcast networks can only hope their big reality TV programming season finales will find more time-shifting viewers in the next couple of days.

Two big reality competition shows -- NBC’s “The Voice” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” -- closed their respective 2013-2014 season’s on down notes in preliminary Nielsen live program plus same day time-shifted viewing results.

NBC’s “The Voice” clocked in with a Nielsen preliminary 3.3 rating/10 share for its two hour season finale at 9 p.m. among 18-49 viewers (11.6 million viewers overall) down 25% from last season finale which earned a 4.4 rating.

For its two-hour finale, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” slipped 11% to a 2.4/7 (14.9 million viewers overall) also at 9 p.m. versus a 2.7 rating for its last season finale.

TV networks get predominantly paid on their average commercial ratings plus three days of time-shifted data (C3) from national advertisers.

Another former big reality show, Fox’s “American Idol,” registered a 1.7/6 at 8 p.m. running against recap shows from “The Voice" and “Dancing with the Stars.”

With the two big reality competitions going head to head, CBS went in another direction -- two special “Judge Judy Primetime” (0.9/3, at 8 p.m.) and “ACM Presents: An All Star Salute to the Troops” (0.9/3, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.).

Fox placed its new reality series “I Wanna Marry Harry” at 9 p.m. against the stiff competition of “The Voice” and “Dancing.” It earned a low 0.7/2 for its troubles.

For the night among 18-49 viewers, NBC took in a 2.8/9 among 18-49 viewers, followed by ABC which scored a 2.1/7, Fox with a 1.2/4; Univision at a 1.0/3; CBS with a 0.9/3; and CW at a 0.8/3.
