Target To Launch Altuzarra Line

Target says its next capsule collection will feature clothing from luxury designer Joseph Altuzarra, best known for suiting up celebs in looks that are equal parts French chic and American ease.

Scheduled to hit stores in mid-September, the line includes 50 items of apparel and lingerie, priced from $18 to $90, with shoes and accessories from $30 to $80. The Minneapolis-based retailer is already teasing the collection online with 15-second videos, and says that an edited assortment of the collection is also planned for sale globally, through Net-A-Porter.com.

Target, in the midst of a search for a new CEO and ongoing disarray related to last December’s data breach, has made capsule collections with hot designers -- ranging from Missoni to Peter Pilotto to Philip Lim -- part of its cheap-chic merchandising approach for years now. But so have its apparel competitors, with some of the more recent partnerships including H&M with Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant; J. Crew with Cynthia Rowley; Topshop and Kate Moss; Kohl’s pairing up with Peter Som, and Banana Republic featuring a collection from Marimekko. That has made it harder to come up with limited-edition creations that seem compelling to finicky fashionistas, and forced retailers to look harder for unexpected collaborators.

“We’re always on the hunt for designers who we believe will inspire our guests,” says Trish Adams, EVP/apparel and home, in its release. “Joseph’s passion for making women feel confident in their fashion choices is unrivaled, and this fall, Target’s guests can experience his signature style at prices that are almost too good to be true.”

A favorite of such actresses as Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Bosworth and Cameron Diaz, the young designer’s brand is back by Kering, the luxury goods conglomerate previously known as PPR. Its other high-end fashion brands include Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney and Puma.
