ESPN's Bodenheimer Exits Cabler

Another senior Disney-ABC Television executive is departing the company: ESPN Executive Chairman George Bodenheimer will leave the company at the end of this week.

Bodenheimer has had a 33-year career at ESPN. From 1998-2012, he was president of the network and led the cable TV sports network group to some massive growth.

Two years ago, Bodenheimer shifted to an executive chairman title with John Skipper taking over as president. “ESPN's future is bright, which is of great comfort to anyone who cares deeply about our company,” said Bodenheimer in a note to colleagues.

In a note to employees, Skipper said: “He believed completely in the collective talent of ESPN’s employees, and he combined a realist’s pragmatism with an optimist’s faith in navigating ESPN through unprecedented growth.”

In early March, Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, announced she was leaving the company in January 2015 to become a television director. ABC News chief Ben Sherwood will succeed Anne Sweeney as the president of the Disney/ABC Television group.

Two years ago, Walt Disney announced it would transition Bob Iger, Disney chairman/chief executive officer, into an executive chairman role in 2015.
