ABC TV Takes Top Spot With High-Income Viewers

With the season only a week old, ABC claims to be top network among higher-income TV viewers -- when it comes to regular scheduled entertainment shows. ABC earned a 2.68 rating among 18-49 viewers who make $100,000 looking at Nielsen's live-plus-same-day viewing results from Sept. 22-28. NBC was at a 2.43; CBS scored a 2.03; and Fox earned a 1.63.

ABC also leads in two other categories: viewers with four years or more of college and those who make $150,000+.

ABC was tops in higher education with a 2.72 rating. NBC was at a 2.32; CBS, a 1.90; and Fox, a 1.78. Among those making $150,000 or more, ABC was at a 2.65; NBC and Fox each earned a 2.43 rating; and CBS had a 1.98.

The network also had seven shows of the top 15 programs when it came to those viewers making $100,000 or more. NBC and Fox each had three; CBS had two. The top show here was ABC’s “Modern Family” with a 6.59 rating, followed by CBS with a 6.56 rating.

The ABC results do not include sports or specials. This would exclude series’ NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and CBS’ “Thursday Night Football.” NFL football in particular skews strong for higher income viewers.

Typically, higher income viewers are so-called “light” TV viewers, which are tougher to pin down for marketers and more in demand. TV networks have added numerous, and some say confusing layers to viewing data this season -- with new projections of shows’ viewership three and seven days after their premieres.
