Google's 3Q Revenue Rises 20%, Takes Wrapper Off Lollipop

Google had a busy week. The company unveiled a new version of its mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, as well as three new Nexus mobile devices, and Thursday reported that for Q3 2014, ended Sept. 30, 2014, revenue rose 20% to $16.52 billion compared with the year-ago quarter.

Owned sites generated $11.25 billion, or 68%, in Q3 2014 -- up 20% compared with the year-ago quarter. Partner sites generated $3.43 billion, contributing 21% to total revenue -- up 9% from the year-ago quarter. Other revenue came to $1.84 billion, or 11%, in the third quarter, representing a 50% increase year-on-year.

Paid clicks rose 17% in Q3 2014, compared with the year-ago quarter. Sites' paid clicks, which include clicks related to ads served on Google owned-and-operated sites rose 24% compared with Q3 2013. Network paid clicks, which include clicks related to ads served on non-Google properties participating in our AdSense for Search, AdSense for Content, and AdMob businesses, rose 2% compared with Q3 2013 and fell approximately 4% sequentially.

The cost-per-click (CPC) fell approximately 2% compared with the third quarter of 2013 and remained constant sequentially. CPCs for Google sites fell 4% and 1%, respectively. Network CPCs fell 4% over the third quarter of 2013 and rose 2% over the second quarter of 2014.

Google took a net loss from discontinued operations in Q3 2014 of $185 million, compared with $193 million in the third quarter of 2013. Net loss from discontinued operations includes a pre-tax adjustment of $26 million related to the release of the deferral of certain revenue for the Motorola Mobile segment. If presented as an operating segment, Motorola Mobile revenue for the third quarter of 2014 would have been $1.69 billion -- $26 million lower than what was included in net loss from discontinued operations.
