Unilever Selects Omnicom's PHD, Resolution Media For Global Search Duties

Consumer goods giant Unilever has selected media shop PHD and search specialist Resolution Media, both part of Omnicom Media Group, for global search engine optimization and search engine marketing duties, the client has confirmed. The two shops will partner on an integrated offering to service the account.

Unilever conducted a separate search review that wrapped in December. Previously much of the search work had been handled by WPP agencies, among others.

Unilever’s search marketing budget wasn’t immediately available.  Its total advertising and promotion budget was approximately $7.6 billion in 2013 according to company reports. Earlier this month Unilever confirmed it had commenced a global media agency review.

Addressing the search marketing review, the company issued a statement: “As has been reported Unilever is in the process of undertaking a global media review. Prior to commencement of this review, Unilever, quite separately, analyzed its search marketing requirements and, as a result, has appointed Resolution Media to work with them in this specialist area.”

For OMG, it’s the second global award that Unilever has bestowed on one of its agencies in recent years. Back in 2012 PHD won most of the firm’s global communications planning assignment, although Interpublic’s Initiative also received a global comms planning award for certain products in the company’s home-care division. Both of those assignments are now part of ongoing media agency review.

PHD and Resolution declined to comment on the search selection, referring queries to the client.

Unilever brands include Dove, Axe, Lipton, Klondike, and Suave, among others.
