Box-Office Revs Down In 2014, Global Revs See Slight Gain

While global theatrical revenues inched up in 2014 -- largely as a result of the Asian markets -- U.S. box office results were down.

The Motion Picture Association of America says domestic U.S. box office results were down 5% to $10.4 billion last year from $10.9 billion in 2013. U.S. box office results are also off 2% versus 2010 when it was $10.6 billion.

Global box office 2014 revenues climbed 1% to $36.4 billion, and 15% more versus 2010 when it was $31.6 billion. Asia-Pacific territories gained 12% in 2014 versus the year before to $12.4 billion, and 46% since 2010.

Looking at all non-U.S. results, there was a 4% gain to $26.0 billion versus 2013 ($25.0 billion) and a 24% hike versus 2010 results ($21.0 billion). Europe, Middle East and Africa markets sank in 2014 versus 2013 -- 3%, to $10.6 billion.

In the U.S., the average price per ticket rose 1% -- around 4 cents, to $8.17. Total U.S. individual admissions were down 6% to 1.27 billion -- which has continued to decline for many years.

The most frequent U.S. moviegoers -- those who go to the movies once a month or more -- are 25- to-39-year-olds, some 7.1 million (21% of the U.S. population). This is followed 7.0 million 18- to-24-year-olds (10% of the U.S. population).
