During SXSW, MRY had two parties planned. Both were held at V Nightclub, formerly known as Haven. The first one, a celebration of MRY Founder Matt Britton's new book,
YouthNation, went off
without a hitch. The venue looked awesome and Busta Rhymes came on stage and did his thing.
The second party, which featured Nas, didn't go off so well. The party started off just fine
but at around 10 p.m. or so the lights came up and cops appeared everywhere. Attendees were asked to leave the building. But halfway through that process, those remaining in the building were
told to stay put.
Those who left the building, and those who hadn't been in yet, were slowly allowed entry. But not before all hell broke loose on the streets outside with police using
bullhorns for crowd control and pompous, self-important d'bags using every tactic in their arsenal to work the door staff. Apparently, the official capacity of the club is half the club's normal fill
rate, so once the allotted number of people were allowed back in was in, the place looked quite empty.
Nas was a good sport about it despite the fact that it looked like people had
blown off his performance for something else. And for those of us who never left and were allowed to stay, it was a pleasantly uncrowded experience -- a welcome change from the usual sweaty meat
market.
