Women's World Cup Kicks Into High Gear

A big-time Women’s World Cup match where the U.S. beat Germany to get into the finals put Fox into the driver’s seat on Tuesday.

The soccer event, which ran in the 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. hour, posted a Tuesday night Nielsen high of a 3.0 rating/13 share among 18-49 viewers and 8.4 million overall viewers.

The USA-Germany semifinal match is now the third-most-watched women’s soccer match of all time, trailing only the USA-China 1999 Women’s World Cup Final, which pulled in 17,975,000.

All this took the wind out of the sails of the summer series leader, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” which earned a 2.5/9 and 10.7 million overall viewers. Still, “Talent” was only down two-tenths of a percentage point from the week before.

Against the “Talent” competition, CBS’ “Zoo” -- its latest in a series of summer scripted dramas -- at 9 p.m. posted a decent 1.2 rating/4 share among 18-49 viewers and 8.2 million overall viewers for its premiere.

Apart from “Zoo,” CBS was in summer rerun mode on Tuesday night with “NCIS” and “NCIS: New Orleans” in repeats. ABC was also in mostly reruns apart from “Extreme Weight Loss” -- which ran for two hours, 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., and got to 0.7/3 and 2.4 million overall viewers.

Later that night, NBC’s “I Can Do That” earned good numbers -- a 1.5/5 and 5.1 million overall viewers -- helped in part from “Talent” strong lead-in viewership.

After the Women’s World Cup, Fox pulled in with a 1.1/4 and 2.7 million viewers for reality athletic competition show, “Beat the Champions,” which ran at 9 p.m. For the night, Fox came in first with a 2.2/8 among 18-49 viewers, followed by NBC at a 2.1/8; CBS with a 0.9/3; Univision at a 0.8/3; ABC with a 0.6/2; and at a CW 0.3/1.

Among overall viewers, NBC was tops at 8.8 million, followed by CBS with 7.2 million; Fox at 5.9 million; ABC with 2.4 million; Univision at 2.2 million; and CW with 852,000.
