A Solution To Reaching Humans, Not Bots: Porn Sites

Bots don’t rule the world. This is both a good and bad thing. It’s good because we humans like being king, but it’s bad because it means Kim Kardashian is an A-list celebrity.

I should explain.

We know that bots don’t rule the world because of Kim K. Apparently bots don’t like porn, according to Are You A Human, a startup that helps marketers verify whether or not they are reaching actual humans. This means bots never would have cared about her sex tape -- and certainly would not have cared about it enough to help launch a career (ironically not in porn).

Are You A Human suggests that bots don’t like crawling porn sites in part because of anonymity. Viewers are less likely to share valuable information on porn sites, Are You A Human posits. The company also points to the limited online engagements of porn sites -- less talking, more viewing -- giving the bots fewer opportunities to dupe viewers.

Online dating sites have only one-third the human activity as the average Web site, Are You A Human notes, while porn sites have eight times the average human activity as dating sites. Are You A Human’s data could also read: “Humans Really Like Porn.”

Essentially, Are You A Human is noting that bots don’t visit porn sites all that often. It’s a cesspool of humans (oh how the tables have turned!). Maybe Nielsen was on to something when one of its ads appeared next to porn on Twitter. Very little bot risk.

But intuition suggests there is a bot connection to porn, and Are You A Human seems to acknowledge this fact in an infographic it released explaining bots’ anti-pornography stance.

“Most bots on dating sites are spam bots that set up fake profiles that try to direct real humans to other content include porn sites, app downloads and money eliciting scam sites,” writes Are You A Human.

In short, a connection does exists, and here's a simple theory as to what that connection is: Porn sites are thought to be significant purveyors of malware, so perhaps the porn sites bots try to direct humans to are inundated with said malware.

So maybe bots don't browse porn sites, but that doesn't mean they don't like porn.
