Maytag, MLB Team Up In Favor Of 'Filthy' Play

There’s playing dirty. And then there’s getting dirty while playing.

Home appliance maker Maytag is teaming up with Major League Baseball to celebrate the latter — as in putting out the effort that results in dirty clothes — with a nationwide contest that could result in one entrant heading to the World Series this year.

“Because our Maytag laundry products are designed, engineered and assembled in America, it only made sense to partner with America’s favorite pastime, Major League Baseball,” Brendan Bosch, senior brand manager for Maytag, tells Marketing Daily. “We really wanted to show consumers that nothing is better equipped to handle the filthiest of baseball stains than Maytag washers and dryers, which have the power to beat big league stains.”

The sweepstakes is an outgrowth of Maytag’s industry-first partnership with MLB. Last month, the two brands launched a “Filthiest Plays of the Week” effort celebrating major league plays that resulted in grass and dirt stains. (Fans were encouraged to vote on the plays they thought were the “filthiest.”) The new promotion encourages fans to upload their own shots — whether they be from Little League, work teams, recreational leagues or something else — with the hashtag, #MyFilthiestPlay on Instagram or Twitter.

“Sliding, diving and other ‘filthy’ plays are some of the most fun and exciting parts of baseball," Bosch says. “As a way to extend this program, we wanted to give players of all levels across the country the chance to participate and submit their own filthy plays.”

Every week, MLB officials will select one photo or video that show off power, grit, style and filth to award weekly prizes. One of those weekly winners will be selected as a grand prize winner to win a grand prize trip for four to a 2015 World Series game (as well as a Maytag Top Load Washer and Dryer pair).

Maytag is promoting the sweepstakes though public relations, its social media channels and through a dedicated page on MLB’s web site.
