'Ukraine!' Promises Long-Form Articles That Go Beyond The War

Ukraine!, an independent publication dedicated to the news and culture of the country, launches today, targeted to English-speaking readers.

The publication aims to offer English speakers a look into the daily life of Ukraine, providing long-form articles on topics that go beyond the international focus on warfare, waged in east Ukraine.

"Now with the public eye turned towards Ukraine, it seems only logical and appropriate for this publication to be created,” stated editor-in-chief Nikolay Ruban.

The publication’s pitch is "to show the developments now happening in modern Ukraine and how they are viewed outside the country,” according to Ruban.

The magazine will be available both in print and online. The content includes stories from U.S. and U.K. reporters stationed in Ukraine. "Journalists who work in Ukraine for American and European media report on politics and warfare, but they see a lot more going on,” Ruban added.

Ukraine! is published independently under license from Russia! magazine, another online media project that launched 10 years ago. Ukraine! will mix investigative reporting with visual content on topics such as politics, culture, art and society.

For example, one of the launch articles is a photo story depicting the conflict between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate, which makes up 70% of the population, and the non-canonical Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate.

The photo story reveals the consequences of the war on Ukrainian religious life.

Ukraine! also includes various opinion articles, an interesting story about what it’s like to be a Ukrainian repatriating, and listicles like “TOP-7 Misconceptions about Ukraine.”

Many of the contributors of Ukraine! are currently based in the country, such as Ian Bateson, Mark Adomanis, Jim Kovpak and Aleksandra Eriksson, who have had bylines in Forbes, Reuters, Al Jazeera and Vice.
