Google Bookmark Feature Lets Users Save Images, Create Collections

A bookmark feature in Google's mobile search engine allows U.S. users on iOS and Android devices to star and bookmark images to easily find them again later. The feature, similar to one offered by Pinterest, creates collections for easy recall.

Instead of requiring the user to take a screenshot or download the images directly to storage in a smartphone, the feature aims to solve the problem by allowing people to store their favorite images in the Google cloud and serve them up on demand through a bookmark that works similar to the way a standard Web page bookmark.

Users can now star and bookmark images directly from Google’s image search in their mobile browser. "Let’s say you're searching for 'bob hairstyles' on Google and an image catches your eye," explains Diego Accame, Google software engineer. "Select it and tap the star. Next time you’re at the stylist, you can easily access the picture without having to dig around or do another search."

The new bookmarking feature -- which enables users to create collections directly from Google images in a similar way to Pinterest -- requires the user to be logged into their account, and allows them to save as well as organize images. The idea is that tapping on an image allows you to hit the star button to save it. A button at the bottom of the screen provides access to all the saved images, which do not download to the device.
