Outside Television Comes To PlayStation Vue

Outside Television, the video network operated by active lifestyle enthusiast title Outside magazine, is expanding its distribution footprint through a partnership with Sony PlayStation Vue. It gives PlayStation owners across the U.S. access to Outside programming via PlayStation’s cloud-based over-the-top platform for live TV viewing.

The partnership will bring Outside Television programming to PlayStation Vue users in major metro areas, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas and Miami.

PlayStation Vue allows users to watch a range of live video programming without a cable or satellite TV subscription.

The PlayStation deal augments Outside Television’s existing distribution deals with providers and platforms, including DISH Network, Comcast XFINITY, Cox Communications, The National Cable Television Cooperative, and Google Fiber, among others.

Outside Television also recently struck a deal with Sling TV, making it the sole provider of extreme sports content for Sling’s “Sports Extra” programming package.

This is just the latest in a series of new digital initiatives from Outside.

Last month, Outside magazine joined forces with The North Face and VR tech and production firm Jaunt to distribute “The North Face: Nepal,” an interactive immersive experience created by the outdoor apparel brand. As part of the program Outside shipped Google Cardboard headset viewers, compatible with smartphones, to 75,000 subscribers with the December issue of the magazine.

Many other magazines are getting into the TV and video programming game. Last week, Wired magazine revealed it is partnering with RadicalMedia to produce a new series for Netflix devoted to design. And Vice is poised to take over A+E’s H2 channel, which will be rebranded as Viceland and will launch early in 2016 in about 70 million homes.
