Hudson News Founders Launch Art and Design 'Galerie' Magazine

At a time when print publications are shuttering, Hudson News founders Lisa and James Cohen have launched their own print magazine, Galerie.

The quarterly aims to cover travel, architecture, fashion art and design. Lisa Cohen’s mission is for Galerie to profile emerging and established artists and designers and to showcase their work and creative processes.

While there won’t be any sponsorships or native advertising, ads from brands like Ralph Lauren Home, Ferragamo, Bunny Williams Home, Brunello Cucinelli, Tufenkian Carpets, Bergdorf Goodman, Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art and Maison Objet will be included in the launch issue.

Lisa Cohen, founder and editorial director, told WWD it is positioned as a "Peoplemagazine for artists."

The publication will target includes art and design enthusiasts, art collectors and the architectural world.

Home and design journalist Suzanne Slesin serves as the magazine’s editor in chief.

Galerie will also have a Web site, which will eventually feature a marketplace for artists. However, for now, the Cohens' focus is on the print editorial; the Web site will be expanded later.

It launches the first week of April and will be available at select Hudson News retailers in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago, as well as in airport shops and select Barnes & Noble stores.

This year, Galerie will be printed three times and begin its quarterly publication cycle in 2017.

Galerie will distribute about 100,000 copies in total and have a controlled circulation of 55,000, WWD reports. The remaining 45,000 will hit the newsstand, including 5,000 copies targeted for foreign retail shops.

The Cohens are donating a portion of the proceeds earned from Galerie sales to the Hetrick-Martin Institute , a provider of social support and programming for at-risk LGBTQ youth. (Lisa Cohen sits on the board.)

Hudson News is one of North America's largest and oldest independent wholesalers of periodicals. They created a new company, Hudson Publishing LLC, and Galerie is their first consumer magazine.

In order to build up its subscription business, the magazine will also be offered free in hotels, showrooms and art and design-centric events such as Art Basel in its various locations, WWD reports.
