'Vice,' 'NatGeo' Lead Webby Award Nominations

Vice and National Geographic lead the nominations for this year’s Webby Awards, which recognize trends and advancements in digital efforts like Web sites, online video, advertising, mobile sites and apps and social.

The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 20th annual Webby Awards on Monday, revealing that the top two nominees are Vice — with 16 nominations — and National Geographic, with four, according to Folio.

Both traditional and digital publishers made an impression on the Academy, with publications like The New York Times receiving 10 nominations and Refinery29 close behind with eight.

Guardian News & Media received eight nominations and The Onion picked up six.

As for notable mentions of other digital publications, Mashable was nominated for best overall social presence, The New Yorker was nominated for best podcast, W Magazine was nominated for best fashion and beauty on social, and The Guardian, Quartz and The Intercept were nominated for best news sites.

The Web Magazine - a now defunct IDG publication - set up the first Webby Awards program in 1997. Now that the days of dial-up are far behind us, the program has expanded rapidly and receives nearly 15,000 entries from more than 70 countries worldwide.

“This class of 20th Annual Webby Nominees, both veterans and newcomers alike, continues to challenge convention and transform the world in ways we could have only imagined in 1997,” stated David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards.

IADAS members will select the winners, which will be announced on Tuesday, April 26. The public has a chance to vote for the Webby People’s Voice Awards online until Thursday, April 21.

The ceremony honoring the winners will take place at Cipriani Wall Street on Monday, May 16, 2016.
