Carat Faces Another Defection: No. 2 Buyer Bolts For Universal McCann

In another high-level defection by a senior member of the Carat management team, Catherine Warburton-Scott has resigned as senior vice president-associate director for national broadcast to join Universal McCann in a top media-buying role.

At UM, Warburton-Scott will report to Donna Wolfe, executive vice president-chief negotiation officer. She starts Feb. 24, just before the 2005-06 upfront buying season begins to take shape.

At Carat, Warburton-Scott was the No. 2 media buyer reporting to Andy Donchin, executive vice president-director of national broadcast. Her departure follows the recent resignation of three of the agency's top executives, including president Charlie Rutman, who is joining MPG as CEO; research chief Joanne Burke, who left for personal reasons; and Doug Flynn, who resigned as CEO of parent Aegis Group.

Despite the exodus, executives familiar with Carat, including executive recruiters who deal with the agency, say morale remains high, and that if anything, some of the departures signal a maturation of Carat, which has evolved to the point that is now a raiding ground for other top media shops.
