Hudson Publishing Kicks Off 'Galerie'

Hudson Publishing, a division of newsstand and retail chain Hudson News, is launching its first magazine, Galerie, focused on art and design.

The oversized glossy will be led by editorial director Lisa Fayne Cohen, wife of Hudson scion James Cohen, who sold the retail and newsstand business in 2007, but continues to run it on behalf of its Swiss owners, and editor-in-chief Suzanne Slesin, who previously served as editor of O at Home, Oprah Winfrey’s domestic title.

(Cohen also still owns the Hudson News magazine distribution business.)

Galerie's target includes art and design enthusiasts, art collectors and the architectural world, exploring the work and lives of artists and investigating how art influences design in a range of disciplines, including architecture and interior design, Fayne Cohen tells the New York Post.

Galerie will launch with a quarterly publication schedule and an initial circulation of 100,000. James Cohen said their ambitions for the new magazine are limited: “It’s a niche book. It’s never going to be a mass-circulation magazine.”

The launch issue of the magazine includes ads from Ralph Lauren Home, Ferragamo, Bunny Williams Home, Brunello Cucinelli, Tufenkian Carpets, Bergdorf Goodman, Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art and Maison Objet. Galerie is available at Hudson News retailers in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago, as well as in airport shops and some Barnes & Noble stores.

The new art mag isn’t the only new high-end print niche put out there.

Last year, Monocle, a magazine devoted to global current affairs, business, culture and design, launched a new travel-focused annual publication called The Escapist. Earlier this year, The Economist relaunched its high-end culture and lifestyle magazine, Intelligent Life, as 1843 -- the year The Economist was founded.
