Unbundling Facebook's F8 Conference

A ton of announcements came out of Facebook’s F8 Developer Conference, on Tuesday. In case you missed any or all of them, here’s a rundown:

Bots for Messenger: Perhaps the most consequential announcement of F8, Facebook is officially inviting brands and other businesses to build bots for its Messenger service. Here’s a more in-depth look at this news.

Instant Articles: In essence, the Instant Articles program is now open to all publishers. My colleague Erik Sass has the scoop.

Save Button: A new Save Button lets people save interesting articles, products, videos, and other content from around the Web into a “Saved” folder on Facebook.

Facebook 360: Facebook has actually built a 3D-360 camera system, Facebook Surround 360, that produces spherical footage in 3D.

Rights Manager: This is a new tool that helps publishers manage and protect video on Facebook at scale.

Crossposted Videos and Total Performance Insights: This update should make it easier for publishers to reuse and monitor their videos across different posts and Pages, and to see the total performance of their videos across Facebook.

Live API:Facebook is opening up a Live API so developers can design different ways for people and publishers to interact and share in real time.

Profile Expression Kit: Facebook will now let people use third-party apps to create profile videos with just a few taps. This is still a closed bet with support for six apps: Boomerang by Instagram, Lollicam, BeautyPlus, Cinemagraph Pro by Flixel, MSQRD and Vine.

Free Basics Simulator & Demographic Insights: Facebook is rolling out a Free Basics Simulator, which lets developers see how their content will appear in Facebook’s Free Basics service.

Account Kit: The idea here is to help publishers grow their app or Web site by giving users a choice of signing in with their phone number or email address rather than a password.

Facebook Analytics for Apps updates: This is a refresh of an existing service, with some new features “People insights” -- a new section that offers anonymized demographic information for people using a publisher’s app.

Quote Sharing: This is a new feature that should make it easier for users to share quotes.
