Vocativ Editor In Chief, Deputy Editor Step Down After One Year

Vocativ editor in chief Jessica Coen is stepping down, according to a report from Politico.

This is the second major exit from Vocativ this week. Erin Gloria Ryan, the pub’s deputy editor, announced Tuesday she was heading to The Daily Beast as a senior editor.

According to a statement, Ryan will “examine how gender roles play out in newly emerging social pockets.”

Both Coen and Ryan came to Vocativ from Jezebel, where Coen was editor in chief and Ryan was managing editor. Coen and Ryan have been at Vocativ for one year.

Coen told staff in a meeting Wednesday morning that she was leaving Vocativ at the end of this week.

She told Politico that she has not decided what she will do after leaving.

"I'm weighing a couple of options and intend to make a decision soon," she told the publication. "There are some new opportunities that I’m eager to explore."

Last year, Vocativ, an online magazine launched in 2013 as a millennial-focused news organization, expanded its staff and announced it would prioritize a few core beats in its day-to-day coverage: national security, technology, gender issues, culture and criminal justice.

Coen oversaw entertainment, culture and sports coverage.
