'Nylon Guys' Books Print Relaunch In 2017

Nylon Media has announced the revival of its men's fashion title Nylon Guys, slated to return to print next year.

It will first appear as a supplement to Nylon magazine’s March, June/July and September issues. In 2018, Nylon Guys will roll out as a standalone, bimonthly publication.

The first Nylon Guys supplement issue will be in the annual Spring Fashion issue of Nylon, which hits newsstands Feb. 21.

Nylon Guys originally launched in 2004, but shuttered in May 2015. Nylon Media said in a statement that at the time, it wanted to “focus its efforts on its core young female audience.”

However, over the last few years, a “huge consolidation” of the men’s fashion and lifestyle print business has created a void in reaching this key demo with relevant editorial, the company added.

"We recognized a dearth in the media landscape of the kind of content Nylon Guys did best—smart but unstuffy storytelling and style for the coolest guys on the planet,” stated Melissa Giannini, editor-in-chief of Nylon.

Nylon magazine’s readership is 20% male, Giannini added, and ironically, Nylon Guys has a “significant female audience,” perhaps due to its “cheeky” tagline: Not for Girls.

The idea of a magazine coming back to print may be surprising, considering we have recently reported the closing down of print titles like Complex and Self.  However, publishers like Hearst have announced the creation of a few new titles as well, such as The Pioneer Woman and The Magnolia Journal.  

Nylon president Jamie Elden added that despite large publishers consolidating print and digital platforms, Nylon has seen "significant rise in its print business, as part of its explosive growth in its own digital, social, and content platforms” in the last year.

Nylon Guys will also relaunch cross-platform.

Last year, Giannini took over as top editor when Michelle Lee left to become the editor-in-chief of Allure. In November, Nylon Media formed a creative content studio to produce sponsored content, including live events, custom experiential activations, video, original content and influencer marketing for brand partners.
