comScore: Deadline Drives Traffic To Tax Sites

  • April 15, 2005
Traffic to tax sites grew this week, as U.S. filers prepared for today's Internal Revenue Service deadline, according to data released Thursday by comScore. More than 1 million Internet users visited IRS.gov on Wednesday, up from 719,000 on the prior Wednesday, April 6. Similarly, 321,000 online users visited turbotax.com on Wednesday, up from 164,000 on April 6; and 214,000 Internet users went to hrblock.com on Wednesday, up from 143,000 on the prior Wednesday. Still, despite the deadline-driven spike, traffic doesn't appear poised to surpass visits in February, when the arrival of W2 forms propels people to start filing. This February, more than 29 million online users in the United States went to tax-related sites, out of 160.2 million U.S. Internet users, while in February of 2004, more than 27 million did so out of 152 million U.S. Internet users. In April of 2004, tax sites saw only two-thirds the traffic as in February, with 17.6 million U.S. visitors out of 155 million U.S. Internet users. This year, tax sites saw 6.9 million unique visitors for the week ending April 3--about half as many as the 13.7 million that visited the week ending Feb. 6. --Wendy Davis
