A+E Networks To Produce Shows For Snapchat

In a new partnership with Snap Inc., A+E Networks will develop original shows for Snapchat’s Discover platform.

The deal will involve talent and brands from across all A+E networks and franchises.  A+E Networks’ digital storytelling unit, 45th & Dean -- a full-service agency supporting brands, shows, advertising and distribution partners -- will create original SnapChat programming.

The first show is called “Second Chance,” an unscripted series, where “emotional exes, face to face, to explore the breaking point in their relationship for the first time.”

Snap has made other deals for Snapchat shows -- mostly riffing off existing on-air linear traditional TV programs.

This includes ABC’s “The Bachelor: Watch Party,” NBC’s “The Voice,” “Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” E!’s “The Rundown” and ESPN’s “Game Day.” BBC’s “Planet Earth II” will debut on Snapchat on Feb.17.

A+E Networks’ 45th & Dean, which will open a state of the art studio in Brooklyn this spring, will create content across all platforms, including Snapchat Shows, as well as “experiential marketing initiatives and customized client events.”

It's going to take a lot better "content" that this to draw millions of viewers into an every day usage habit, I'm afraid. In like manner, Netflix's recent announcement that most of its new program development will consist of "reality" fare is also a sign of the times. Such programs may be cheaper to make but there's plenty of this type of fare on the broadcast TV networks and cable---so what's so different?
