Oscars TV Ads Sell Out, Modest Price Hikes

TV advertising on ABC’s “89th Annual Academy Awards” has sold out, with the network grabbing modest single-digit percentage price gains for commercials, versus a year ago.

The top price for a 30-second announcement improved around 7% to an average price around $2.1 million, according to analysts -- with a top price of around $2.5 million.

A year ago, the average price was around $1.9 million to $2 million, according to Kantar Media. With around 60 individual commercials in an estimated three-hour newscast, that will yield around $120 million in total national TV dollars for this year's show.

According to the network, 2017's list of advertisers include: AARP, Adidas, Anheuser-Busch, AT&T, Diamond Producers Association, Disney Attractions, FX Network, General Motors, Hyatt, Johnson & Johnson, McDonalds, The New York Times, Revlon, Samsung, United Healthcare, Verizon, Walmart and the Walt Disney Studio.

For a five-year period, from 2011 to 2015, Kantar Media says five companies accounted for 46% of total advertising revenue in the show -- Samsung, JCPenney, Hyundai, American Express and Coca-Cola.

The Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26.
