With Help From The King, CBS 'Desparately' Tries To Catch ABC On Sunday Night

CBS's presentation of Part One of "Elvis" outperformed the CBS Sunday Movie average by double digits in viewers and key demographics, according to early Nielsen affiliate ratings for Sunday.


But ABC continued to dominate the Sunday, averaging a 10.1 rating/17 share for the evening, and besting CBS' average 8.7 rating/15 share for Sunday night. NBC trailed with a 5.7 rating/10 share, followed by FOX, which scored a 4.6 average rating/8 share. Part One of "Elvis" was second in households, with a 9.0 rating/14 share, viewers (13.8 million), adults ages 25-54 (4.8/11), and adults ages 18-49 (3.9/09). Still, compared to CBS' average rating for the usual Sunday movie that airs in that slot, for this season, "Elvis" was up 20 percent in households (from a 7.5 rating/12 share), with a 23 percent rise in viewers (from 11.27 million), 26 percent in adults ages 25-54 (from a 3.8 rating/08 share), and up 30 percent in adults ages 18-49 (from a 3.0 rating/07 share). Meanwhile, "60 Minutes" was first in households (7.3/15), viewers (10.59m), and second in adults ages 25-54 (2.6/08) behind "Dateline NBC" (2.1/8 in ages 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall). The NBC newsmagazine scored its highest Sunday 18-49 rating in six telecasts since March 13, an NBC spokesman said.
