Online Radio Listening Still on the Rise

According to a new report by MeasureCast Inc., the total number of hours streamed by web radio stations rose during the week of Aug. 5. The MeasureCast Internet Radio Listening Index for the week of Aug. 5 - 11 rose 3% making this the first index increase since July 14. Since Jan. 6, 2002, the total time spent listening to Web radio stations measured by MeasureCast is up 136%. The index is a representation of the trend in the total time spent listening (TTSL) to a spectrum of online radio stations monitored by MeasureCast. And 19 of The MeasureCast Weekly Top 25 Internet radio stations experienced an increase in the total time spent listening to their webcasts. Eighteen stations showed an increase in audience size.

Other highlights from the report include:
- The peak listening day was Tuesday, Aug. 6, with 20% of all listening occurring.
- Internet radio listening is primarily a work-hour phenomenon.
- Only 10% of the week’s listening took place on the weekend.
- 27% of Internet radio listeners were between the ages of 25 and 34. 56% were younger than 35, 29% were younger than 25, and 7% were older than 55.
- 69% of listeners were men; 31% were women.
- In the U.S., 33% of listeners resided in the South; 31% in the West,
- 19% in the Northeast, and 17% in the Midwest. Top streaming nations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Mexico.
