NBC Universal Narrows Media Buying Review To Six, Two Incumbents

NBC Universal, the General Electric unit that sells a lot of media, is close to naming a shop to buy a lot of media. The broadcast and cable TV programming division has moved into the serious stages of its media services review, the result of General Electric's corporate due diligence following the NBC Universal merger.

NBC has cut the number of agencies competing for the account to six: MDC Partners' The Media Kitchen, Publicis Groupe's MediaVest, Horizon Media, Interpublic's Deutsch and Initiative Media units, and another unnamed agency.

Before the merger, Horizon Media separately handled the media buying chores for NBC networks, as well as USA Network and Sci-Fi Channel cable group.

The Media Kitchen is the incumbent for planning work for the USA Network properties, while MediaVest is the incumbent for planning for NBC networks.

The review is only for NBC's TV properties. Media planning and buying for the Universal Pictures account, now at OMD, is not up for grabs.

A decision on NBC Universal's media account is expected to be made next month, in time for the new fall season.

Telemundo is not included in the review. An NBC spokewoman had no comment.
