PBS Becomes Public Broadband System, Offers Downloads -- For A Fee

PASADENA, CALIF.--PBS has joined the digital entertainment race, much like the commercial broadcast networks. Through the Open Media Network Internet platform, many of PBS's most popular shows--such as "Antiques Roadshow," "Now," and the kids' show "Arthur"--will be available for an unlimited playback for $1.99.

One exception is the science show, "Nova," which will have a pricey $7.99-an-episode price tag. PBS announced the initiative at the Television Critics Association Press tour.

Open Media Network is nonprofit Internet company that already distributes educational programming in DVD quality. The program downloads are viewable on notebook computers, portable media players, cell phones, and set-top boxes.

Using the effort to push its marketing message, a TV commercial will be included in those program downloads, urging viewers to become PBS members.
