7-Eleven Drops Citgo's Gas In Wake Of Chavez Flap
Sep 28, 2006, 5:00 AM
7-Eleven said Wednesday that it was ending its 20-year supply agreement with Citgo Petroleum, and is making the switch to its own branded gasoline. "Regardless of politics, we sympathize with many Americans' concern over derogatory comments about our country and its leadership recently made by Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez," the company said in a statement. But it also made it clear that a boycott of the Venezuelan-owned Citgo, which employs 4,000 people in the U.S., would harm "Americans with no substantive connection to Venezuela." The company added that the Citgo name would be off most 7-Eleven canopies by 2008. Chavez referred to President Bush as "the devil" last week.
