Sony said it hit its goal of shipping 1 million PlayStation3 consoles in North America during the 2006 holiday retail season. There were doubts Sony would be able to meet its target, given the high price point of its game console versus its competitors, as well as other manufacturing issues that impacted delivery of its shipments.
Nintendo has been stealing thunder from both competitors with its upstart, family friendly and well-priced Wii console. Nintendo said it would ship 4 million consoles by the end of 2006, and had not been dogged by any availability issues or pricing concerns that have marred its rivals' sales. -- Emily Burg
