Holiday Game Console Sales Hit Mark

  • January 9, 2007
Shipments of Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console reached 10.4 million worldwide for 2006, besting the company's estimates of 10 million, the company reported. Microsoft predicts it will ship between 13 million and 15 million Xboxes by June 30, which marks the end of its fiscal year.

Sony said it hit its goal of shipping 1 million PlayStation3 consoles in North America during the 2006 holiday retail season. There were doubts Sony would be able to meet its target, given the high price point of its game console versus its competitors, as well as other manufacturing issues that impacted delivery of its shipments.

Nintendo has been stealing thunder from both competitors with its upstart, family friendly and well-priced Wii console. Nintendo said it would ship 4 million consoles by the end of 2006, and had not been dogged by any availability issues or pricing concerns that have marred its rivals' sales. -- Emily Burg
