On Dec, 4, NBC's "Nightly News" was solely sponsored by Philips Electronics, adding six minutes of news. The ABC versions will air on Friday nights in April 2, 9, 16 and
23, with CVS sponsoring the last one.
ABC says the backer for the other three broadcasts wants to remain confidential until they air. The evening-news ratings race has suddenly become more competitive, with ABC beating "Nightly News" four times in the last six weeks.
