Outdoor advertising maintained a robust growth rate in the first quarter of 2007, with an 8% increase in revenue compared to the same period in 2006, according to new figures from the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. The industry brought in $1.6 billion in total revenues in the first three months of this year.

The growth was powered by increases in nine of the 10 biggest ad categories--with communications and insurance and real estate leading the way, with growth rates of 20% and 14.7%, respectively.

Also strong were automotive accessories and equipment, with 13.1% growth, and automotive dealers and services, up 6.1%. Local services and amusements grew 11.5%.

The growth in auto ad spend is especially impressive in light of declines in that category for other media--chiefly newspapers, which have seen national display and classified ads slipping. Auto ad dollars are headed primarily to TV, the Internet and out-of-home categories.
