Reality Shows Sink In Summer

Summer reality doldrums continue. This time, ABC's "Shaq's Big Challenge" took the hit. ABC's reality show--which stars NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, who helps overweight kids with their fitness and health goals--only pulled in a 1.8 rating/5 share. It came second in the time period to a Fox repeat of "House," which earned a 2.2/6.

ABC has had a tough time with reality shows this summer, with "The Ex-Wives Club," "Fast Cars & Superstars" and "The Next Best Thing" all sinking to low sub-2.0 ratings.

To be fair, Fox and CBS have had their share of reality problems--both with Mark Burnett shows: Fox with "On the Lot" and CBS with "Pirate Master." Fox's "On The Lot" on Tuesday is now down to a 1.1 rating.

The overall winner of Tuesday night was NBC, as its "America's Got Talent" reality show continues to share big summer honors with Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance." Both of these returning summer reality shows have been in the 3.0 to 4.0 rating range.

"Talent" posted a sturdy 3.8/12 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. "Talent" also helped a "Law & Order: SVU" repeat, which posted a 2.7/8. NBC won the night with a 3.4/11 rating.

For the night, ABC came in second with 1.8/5; then Fox at 1.6/5 and CBS at 1.5/5.

MyNetwork TV eked out a win over CW, with a rerun of its movie "Distinguished Gentleman" over CW's "Gilmore Girls" and "Veronica Mars" reruns. MNTV scored a 0.5/2 to CW's 0.4/1.
